San Francisco to Apologize for Wrongs to Chinese Immigrants

On February 1, 2022 the San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a resolution offering a formal apology to Chinese immigrants and their descendants over past atrocities. We are proud of the two SFUSD students and SFCAUSE volunteers who spent their time researching and drafting this resolution. The resolution cited numerous instances of racism against the Chinese community dating back to the 19th century, including SFUSD’s closure of Chinese schools between 1870-1885. The public education and acknowledgement of atrocities are a first step to addressing issues facing the Asian American community in a time of Anti-Asian hate.

Self Help for the Elderly

The organization acquired 50+ iPads just days before the COVID-19 quarantine in March 2020. They were originally needed for outreach within the API community to increase participation in the 2020 census, but subsequently were donated for seniors in the Self Help for the Elderly program to gain literacy in modern technology and have a reliable device to attend virtual appointments, classes, vocational training, or employment. Seniors gained proficiency in not only navigating Zoom and other social media outlets to communicate with family and friends, but completing the census online.

Tutoring Initiative

One of our core missions is to increase opportunities for the youth through education. We believe that we could help students flourish by building strong social skills and support systems. Through our tutoring initiative, we work with High School students local to San Francisco that serve as tutors who gain essential leadership and communication skills as they provide academic support for tutees, lead projects, and design lessons. Tutees from local Middle Schools sign up to find assistance for increased academic success and build empathy, leadership, and communication skills.
